STEVEN R. EMERSON
Professor: School of Oceanography
Senior Fellow
: JISAO
Member of the Program on Climate Change (PCC)

Ph.D. l974 Columbia University

Research Interests:

I have two main research goals. (1) The first is the study the geochemistry of the major atmospheric gases (N2,O2, Ar and Ne) and their isotopes to determine the processes that lead to gas saturation in seawater with a special emphasis on the flux of O2 form the euphotic zone of the upper ocean. (2) The second major research effort utilizes the distribution of trace metals and their isotopes in marine sediments to study present and past distributions of oxygen in the deep ocean.
