Research Interests:

• Investigating biogeochemical cycles using unusual biological compounds as bio-markers, with a current emphasis on UV-absorbing compounds.
• Elucidating the processes generating and slowly transforming seemingly recalcitrant organic matter and the chemical alterations rendering dissolved organic compounds resistant to microbial degradation.
• Understanding the nature and dynamics of the low molecular weight DOM pool in various environments (e.g. estuarine systems, deep ocean DOC pool).
• Combining traditional, compound specific analytical approaches with innovative new methods capable of visualizing the secondary structure of intact molecules, primarily through recently developed mass spectrometric techniques.
