The College of Ocean and Fisheries Sciences is in the process of developing an Honors program. Students who fulfill the requirements will be able to graduate with distinction from the college. The program should be in place by fall 2002. Currently, the outline for the undergraduate honors program is developing as follows:

Entry Requirements

  • Cumulative GPA (UW or otherwise) of 3.3
    and a minimum of 25 undergraduate credits
  • Declared major in SAFS or Oceanography
  • Declared intention to pursue COFS Honors

Exit Requirements

  • Cumulative UW GPA of 3.3
  • Cumulative COFS GPA of: 3.5 for SAFS -or- 3.4 for Oceanography
  • Completion of normal School requirements
  • Completion of at least one 3 class Honors sequence in Natural Sciences. The default sequence is Marine Biology. However, other sequences, including Biology, Chemistry, or Physics can be taken by special arrangement with the UW Honors Program.
  • Completion of 11-12 credits of senior thesis, including:
    • Oceanography of Puget Sound (OCEAN 442 - 3 credits)
      -or-
      Fisheries Techniques (FISH 210 - 5 credits)
    • Directed seminar (e.g., FISH 522 1-2 credits)
    • Directed research (6-9 credits)
    • Publication quality manuscript (as independently assessed)
    • Oral presentation in a public forum
    • Poster presentation in a public forum
